PRIYA MULANI

I have been an ardent lover of dogs right from the late 1970’s. It took some convincing with my parents to get me my first dog, after which I have never lived a day without a dog in my life.

Over the last 2 decades I have owned and bred various breeds. My first Bassets came to me in 2000, a gorgeous pair of tri-colour bassets, Ch.Kaa’s Adora of Reegha’s (Hooghy) and Ch. Knightsville Barney (Scooby). Both came to me as adults from Mr.Padman.

I bred this combination and this was the start of Winters Hill Basset Hounds as well as a great friendship with Padman. From my first litter I retained Winters Hill's Armani Girl.

In 2001 I imported CH. Kinkiwi Fenton Feelgood (Casper) from Kinkiwi Kennels in Australia. This was a very important addition to my kennel. Casper has sired some outstanding puppies with lovely heads; and has produced over 23 champions to date.

Around the same time I also imported Dooby from USA. Dooby is a lovely tri-color bitch, but unfortunately my breeding plans with her did not go very far as she could never have a successful litter.

At that time there were not many Basset enthusiasts around. It took a lot of time and patience to bring awareness of the breed into India. Today I am proud to say that it has all paid off and Winters Hill has paved the way for other Basset Hound breeders too.

In early 2006, I felt the need to bring in new blood lines as I wanted to keep the functional purpose of Basset hounds in mind. This lead me to importing Swede Sun's Martin (from Swede Sun's Kennel, Sweden) and Bahama V. Hollandheim (Hollandheim Kennel, France). Both these bassets are extremely impressive and true to type and functional purpose. I am very grateful to Paula Sunebring and Carla Gerber for letting me have these wonderful dogs.

In 2008 I have taken a big step forward by welcoming Preeti into the Winters Hill family. I am looking forward to this partnership and am sure it will add lots of value to the Bassets in India.

PREETI NARAYANAN

I was seven when I decided that I was going to have a home filled with dogs. Everyone thought it was very amusing. My parents even bought me a dog figuring that would take care of it. Hmmm…don't think it did.

We are a family of 27! Raj, my daughter - Tapasya, our 24 dogs and myself. Our crowded little home is in suburban Bangalore and we are fortunate to have understanding neighbours who don't have a fit every time the dogs decide to do a rendition of 'Who let the dogs out'!
There are no kennels in our house and all our dogs live together. Sounds amazing? I also board dogs and guess what they too live with my dogs while they are here!

I have been involved with Wire-haired Dachshunds and have now added Bassets into my world. Sally, my first Wire-haired Dachshund came to me as a wedding gift and I was hooked! You have to live with a Wire-haired Dachshund to understand what an amazing breed they are. They say dogs aren't human and don't treat them as such. But whoever said that never had a Wire-haired Dachshund! And that's when I decided that it was my duty to introduce people to this amazing breed.

The Bassets happened solely because of Casper! Long, floppy ears, long body with skin that seemed to roll off him; lovely droopy eyes that just begged to be petted. How do you pass by a Basset Hound without stopping to scratch those mop-like ears and getting a lick from those come hither eyes?!

I ended up meeting Priya Mulani, and that was it! Before I could stop myself I became the proud and slightly bemused owner of Dopey, a Casper daughter! Floppy, playful, boisterous, droopy-eyed Dopey and I will admit that I love every moment of it!

I felt it was a dream come true when Priya put forward the idea of me joining the Winters Hill family. This was the perfect opportunity to get involved with a breed that I had completely fallen in love with.

I am certain that with our combined experience, passion and resources we will  be able to make a further significant contribution to the Bassets in India.
